SureShift - the gear shift indicator with shift light

The advantages of gear shift indicators for motorcycles, especially in motor sports, are well-known and no longer have to be highlighted.
In rally or touring cars, for example, large LED gear shift displays are often visible in the cockpit (video example).
Many manufacturers of sport motorcycles now equip their top models with a gear shift display.

By the same token, an adjustable shift light is a useful accessory, which is finding its way from motor sport to the street motorcycle. It is used to determine the optimal engine speed to shift in next gear or as a warning of maximum engine speed. The SureShift from motogadget is a compact digital gear shift indicator combined with a two-stage shift light.

The casing
The high-quality aluminum casing is milled from solid metal on CNC machines and its surface is brushed, anodised in black or mirror polished. The electronics are fully molded in the casing and thus protected from the weather, water, dust and vibration.
Two threaded bushes on the reverse side easily mount the SureShift to any motorcycle.
The simple, neutral design and compact dimensions of only 33 mm in diameter and 14.5 mm in height make the SureShift an ideal accessory for any motorcycle.

The display
The LED display developed in-house represents an innovation in this area of application. It displays the digits normally or inverse and is the clearly visible, two-stage shift light at the same time e.g. if all LEDs are flashing. 37 ultra-bright red LEDs form a display surface.
The luminosity of the LEDs is automatically adjusted to achieve the best possible readability in darkness, sunlight and dusk.

The function
The SureShift is connected to the compatible electronic speedo sensor available at the vehicle or to an optional speed sensor (reed contact) from motogadget. An engine speed signal is also fed from the ignition box or ignition coil. It is then calibrated once in a learning procedure to the vehicle-specific gear ratio. It can then immediately determine the gear position from the speed signal and engine speed. No mechanical switches or similar devices are required.
An exact calibration of the speed is not required. The neutral position of the gearbox is read out in parallel to the neutral indicator light over the conventional neutral switch.

An engine speed threshold is programmed into the device for each of the two shift indicator stages.
An engine speed ring can also be activated, which displays the engine speed as an LED ring. It is not used to display an absolute value, but to make the distance of the actual engine speed value to the set shift indicator engine speed ascertainable visually. That means if the circle is closed, the engine speed has reached the set shift indicator threshold. The driver gets a good fell for when a critical value is reached.

Connection and compatibility
If the vehicle has a transistorized ignition (negative pulse, 98% of all street bikes), the signal is compatible with the SureShift. The engine speed is then transferred direction from the ignition box or ignition coil. Should there be a capacitor ignition (CDI), an additional ignition signal pickup unit must be used.

For most motorcycles with an electronic tachometer, the tacho signal of the original sensor can be used. All sensors with a signal level of +5 V to +12 V are compatible. For example this includes Harley-Davidson™, Buell, Ducati, Aprilia, Suzuki Bandit (with electronic tacho) and most others.
Should there be no electronic speedometer or there is no suitable signal, a complete speedometer kit can be ordered from motogadget.
It contains a very small reed contact (M5) with 150 cm connecting cable, two small neodymium magnets and an epoxy glue.

The device is normally programmed and set once after installation. If the gear transmission ratio is changed or the device is installed on a new vehicle, the settings must be made again. A simple push button signal controls the setting. For example, the gear lever or neutral switch can be used. If this is too circuitous , the included mini buttons or any other button can be temporarily connected. If the device is set correctly once, this button is no longer necessary for operation.

The simple wiring (5 connections: +12V, ground, speedo signal, engine speed signal, neutral switch) as well as the comprehensive installation and operating instructions also make connecting the instrument easy for users, who have previously stayed away from the vehicle electronics.

Versions
The casings are available in the following versions: Black or mirror polish.
We can offer also brackets with the same finish. Please see pics on the right side.
